Another directorial venture of Kamal Haasan, the film was initially titled Sandiyar. Hey Ram went to win three National awards and was also the official entry for the Academy Awards that year. Since shooting was interrupted, Kamal was forced to change the title to Virumaandi. On several instances, his films have had story themes that were found to be controversial; let it be religion or caste. However due to pressure from theater owners, the film had a conventional theatrical release. The film was a huge hit and won immense critical acclaim, also earning a cult status. The lyrics of the poem which had references to Hindu deities were found controversial and hence were demanded to be removed from the movie. There was also controversy as the film was initially planned to be released directly on DTH. A political outfit found the title derogatory and insisted that it would induce caste based violence. Vishwaroopam had faced a 15-day ban thanks to protests. The actor had to go to the Supreme Court to get the film released in the state.
