Mammootty’s next film Kunjali Marakkar will be directed by Santosh Sivan. The poster screams the name of award-winning cinematographer Santosh Sivan in bold letters as he will be directing the film, besides co-producing and cranking the camera. August Cinema, which is co-owned by Santosh, will be bankrolling the project under its banner. See Kunjali Marakkar first look here:

It comes hours after a section of media reports claimed that Malayalam superstar Mohanlal will be playing the role of Kunjali Marakkar in a period film, which will be directed by Priyadarshan. “We are grateful to the legendary Navodaya for their large-heartedness in allowing us to use their prestigious title ‘Maamaankam’.”
“The film will see a big star cast along with me and employing internationally renowned technicians,” he had said. “The movie will be a mix of fiction and facts as information about many of the incidents that happened during the era is unavailable. Mammootty, meanwhile, has already announced a big-ticket period film called Maamaankam, which will be helmed by debutante director Sajeev Pillai. However, Mammootty’s announcement is likely to cause confusion among fans as director Priyadarshan was quoted by a newspaper saying he will be doing a film with Mohanlal based on the life of Kunjali Marakkar, which was the title given to the Muslim naval chief of the Zamorin (Samoothiri). The filmmakers have borrowed the title the Prem Nazir’s 1979 film Maamaankam. ISC (@santoshsivan) November 1, 2017
We wonder, what are the chances of Mohanlal and Mammootty playing the same role in different films? It is worth noting that Santosh Sivan had directed superhit period film Urumi in 2011 under August Cinema. It’s all scattered and we are trying to combine all of that and come up with a good storyline,” the director was quoted as saying in the same report.
